Rankings and reputation
Research-driven Swansea University is the third-largest university in Wales. It’s ranked as the 108th best university in Europe and joint 34th in the UK. The latest Research Excellence Framework assessment rated 86% of the university’s overall research as world-leading or internationally excellent in areas including Medicine, Life Sciences and Business and Management.
The University of Wales Trinity Saint David puts its emphasis on career-focused learning, offering practical experience and courses designed with industry in mind. The Complete University Guide, which uses data from the National Student Survey (NSS), ranks it second in the UK for student satisfaction, thanks to its strong student support and friendly and approachable staff.
Location
The main draw of Swansea University is its beachside campuses, which sit either end of the city’s seafront. Singleton Campus is set outside the city centre, and a stone’s throw from the beautiful Singleton Park, with its open green fields and botanical garden. The Bay Campus sits right on the beachfront beside Crymlyn Burrows, a salt marsh and Site of Special Scientific Interest. There are direct bus services from right outside true student Swansea to the city centre and both campuses. Alternatively, it’s just a 20-minute bike ride either way.
UWTSD’s city centre locations put you right in the heart of the action, from shopping and cafes to the legendary nightlife of Wind Street. Their Business and Art campuses are just a 15-minute walk from true student Swansea, whereas the Waterfront Campus and Innovation Centre, situated in the city’s vibrant maritime quarter, is around a 25-minute walk from our accommodation.
Campus and facilities
Swansea is a seaside city, and whichever university you choose, you’ll be able to take advantage of some serious beach time, as both have campuses either on the coast or within easy walking distance of it.
UWTSD offers two distinct campus experiences: the Swansea College of Art campus is right in the heart of the city’s creative quarter, where you’ll find galleries, theatres and independent shops and cafes. The Swansea Waterfront Campus is the university’s STEM centre and also home to its newest library, which offers amazing views of Swansea Bay and the docks. UWTSD has some great modern facilities, such as on-campus theatres, artist studios, gyms and a sports hall.
Swansea University’s Singleton Campus is set in beautiful parkland and is home to the university’s £20 million sports village, which features a 50m pool, an outdoor athletics track, multi-use pitches, gym, squash and tennis courts. It also has several specialised laboratories on campus, including an environmental chamber and muscle function lab. The Bay Campus is right on the seafront and is home to the Faculty of Science and Engineering, among others. It has a range of specialised facilities including advanced imaging facilities, wave tanks and wind tunnels.
Key courses
With its state-of-the-art sports facilities and laboratories, Swansea University rates in the top 100 courses in the world for its sport-related courses. Other highly rated courses include Marketing, Law, Science and Engineering.
UWTSD puts an emphasis on career-ready courses. The latest Guardian University League Table 2026 showed that it ranked in the top 10 for Music, Film, Sports Science, Fashion and Textiles and Psychology, among others.
History
It’s probably not the first thing you want to know when thinking about what is the best university in Swansea, but it’s still interesting to know a little about the history of these storied institutions.
The first stone of Swansea University was laid in 1920 by King George V, with 89 students enrolling in the same year. It grew from a two-building campus in 1947 to an institution that fostered ground-breaking innovations and research in areas including engineering and life sciences.
The University of Wales Trinity Saint David is a more recent addition, formed in 2010 through a merger of two existing institutions and then including Swansea Metropolitan University three years later. Its oldest campus, Lampeter, was founded in 1822 as St David’s College, to provide a liberal education to members of the clergy.
Student population
Swansea University is home to around 18,000 students, with approximately 20% coming from overseas. With around 11,500 students at UWTSD, the two universities help create a lively and diverse student population. This means you’ll find plenty of student-focused events, nightlife and support services throughout the city.
Famous alumni
Want to follow in the footsteps of your favourite sporting legends? Swansea University has produced a number of notable sportspeople, including former Wales rugby captain Alun Wyn Jones and Paralympic gold medal swimmer Liz Johnson. Professor Olek Zienkiewicz, co-developed the Finite Element Method during his PhD at Swansea, and celebrated author Kingsley Amis published Lucky Jim during his tenure as an English lecturer at the university.
Over at UWTSD, famous alumni from the collective institutions include Guardian music critic and writer, Pete Paphides, Welsh national rugby union team player, Jasmine Joyce-Butchers, and author Ian Marchant.
Societies
Swansea University has over 150 societies, from Anime and Creative Writing to Gardening and Live Music, so whatever you’re into (and maybe things you’re not yet into), there will be a society for you. As a sports-focused university, there are over 50 sports clubs too.
