Where is Leicester? A Student Guide to Your New Favourite City

Thinking of moving to Leicester for university? This vibrant, welcoming, and surprisingly well-located city could end up being your perfect uni match. With a buzzing student scene, loads of personality, and all the essentials within easy reach, Leicester has everything you need to thrive during your student years. Whether you’ve already considered it or it’s just popped up on your radar, here’s why Leicester should be firmly on your list.
So... where is Leicester
Leicester is right in the middle of England - in a region called the East Midlands. You’re looking at about an hour and a half from London by train, 45 minutes from Birmingham, and just a short trip from cities like Nottingham, Derby, and Coventry.
It’s perfectly placed if you like the idea of exploring the country without committing to the chaos (or cost) of the bigger cities. Whether you're heading home for the weekend or planning a trip to see mates, Leicester makes it easy to get around.
Student life done right
Two major unis - the University of Leicester and De Montfort - means the city is full of students from all over the UK (and beyond). That gives it a really lively energy. Bars, cafés, shops, gyms - you’ll find loads of places that are either designed for students or totally welcoming to them.
Each part of the city has its own vibe. You’ve got Clarendon Park for cute coffee shops and leafy streets, the Cultural Quarter for all things creative, and the city centre if you want nightlife, shopping, or somewhere to grab a cheeky bite after lectures. Easy to get around (and out of town)
One of the best things about Leicester is how manageable it feels. The city isn’t massive, which means most places are walkable - no need to rely on expensive taxis or endless bus routes. When you do need public transport, there are reliable buses and plenty of cycle paths.
And if you’re heading further afield? The M1 runs next to here, and the train station connects you to pretty much anywhere - London, Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham - all without much faff. There’s even an East Midlands airport nearby if you’re dreaming of a getaway during reading week. Learn more: Getting About in Leicester
More going on than you'd expect
Leicester’s a city full of surprises. It’s one of the UK’s most diverse cities, and that shows up in the food, the festivals, and the friendly atmosphere. You’ll find everything from world-class curries to Caribbean street food - and probably stumble across a cultural celebration or parade on your way to the shops.
It’s also got a bit of historical drama. Remember King Richard III? He was famously discovered in a Leicester car park (seriously), and you can visit the museum dedicated to him in the city centre.
Football fans will know Leicester City made headlines in 2016 for their miracle Premier League win - but even if you don’t follow the sport, the city’s love for its team is infectious. Read more about things to do in Leicester: Places to Visit in Leicester for Free
