Moving to study in Leicester? You’ve probably already thought about clothes, bedding, and kitchen basics, but we bet you haven’t prepped your glow sticks and spork? In this blog, we’ve made a list of very unusual but unexpectedly useful things that will save the day.

1. Khaki

Leicestershire is home to The Victory Show, a weekend of historical scenes and even a reenactment. Fancy a visit? Look the part with a pair of khaki trousers so that you’re dressed for the occasion.

2. A spork

The king of all kitchen utensils deserves a place in your student accommodation. It covers all of your cutlery needs with just one tool, making it the perfect student essential. Ideal for those nights where you find yourself eating directly from a takeaway container.

3. Shin pads

Shin pads - handy for extreme sports, impending danger and… kicking bottles. That’s right, the Hallaton Bottle Kicking Contest should be high on your Leicester student bucket list. It’s basically rugby mixed with absolute chaos, played in the name of historical pride.

4. A desk mascot

Every student needs a small, quirky companion - whether it's a tiny dinosaur, a rubber duck, or a pet rock. When you’re deep into an all-nighter, your desk mascot will be there to silently judge your life choices and offer emotional support. Bonus points if it has a name.

5. Random award trophy

Perfect for handing out to your mates when they finally finish their coursework or manage to go a whole day without napping. Even better if it’s engraved with something ridiculous like ‘Champion of Procrastination’. It might start as a joke, but soon everyone will be fighting over who gets the trophy every week.

6. Stress balls

University life can get intense, and nothing says stress relief like aggressively squeezing a rubber ball while staring blankly at your mounting deadlines. Stress balls are an essential survival tool for coping with everything from coursework pressure to the existential dread of student loans.

7. Glow sticks

Leicester’s nightlife is full of rave-themed events, and you will need glow sticks at some point. Whether it’s a full-blown UV party or just an impromptu flat rave in the kitchen, having a stash of glow sticks ensures you’re always ready for a neon-fuelled night out.

8. A board

For “Bring a Board” night. Think dessert boards, snack platters, or even an elaborate charcuterie spread. Nothing builds friendships faster than sharing a carefully curated selection of food. Plus, if all else fails, you’ll have a feast to console yourself if your social skills crash and burn. Read our blog for more inspo: Bring a Board Night Ideas

9. A deck of tarot cards

People love a dramatic reading at 2 AM, and nothing bonds new friends faster than a slightly questionable prediction of their academic future. Even if you have no idea what you’re doing, just make something up - no one will question your mystical authority at that time of night.

10. Your lucky socks

Whether they’re covered in lucky shamrocks, tiny avocados, or just your favourite pair that never lets you down, having a designated pair of lucky socks is a must. Plus, they might just be the thing that helps you survive an unexpected seminar presentation with minimal embarrassment.

Leicester student life is anything but ordinary, and these items will ensure you’re prepared for every weird and wonderful moment - from medieval-style brawls to glow-stick-fuelled raves and spontaneous fortune-telling sessions. Need more help? Read our blog: What to Take to University
