Its central location, just off the M1, means it’s within easy distance of much of the UK, with plenty of other great cities close by: Leeds, Manchester and Nottingham are all around an hour by train, while you can get to London in just over two hours. What's it like to be a student in Sheffield?
With a buzzing student population of around 60,000, Sheffield is a popular place to study. In fact, the University of Sheffield came second in the UK for Student Life in the 2026 Whatuni Student Choice Awards, while its students’ union also took second place.
Around the city, you’ll find plenty of student-friendly events and deals in bars, restaurants, shops, cinemas and bowling alleys. It’s also one of the cheaper UK cities to live in, so you should find your budget stretches a little further here.
One of the best things about living in Sheffield is your proximity to green spaces. The “Green City” is made up of around 61% parks, woodlands and public gardens, plus a third of the city lies inside the Peak District National Park, so escaping the hustle and bustle couldn’t be easier.
What is there to do in Sheffield?
Sheffield has a thriving cultural scene that’s hard to beat. From a big night out on West Street and craft beers on Kelham Island to live music at Foundry, your evenings are well and truly sorted. And every summer, Tramlines brings big-name acts to Hillsborough Park for one of the largest urban music festivals in the UK.
You can catch world-class talent at the city’s famous Crucible and Lyceum theatres. The Crucible is also home to the World Snooker Championship.
Sheffield has a thriving food scene and takes its coffee pretty seriously too, with plenty of speciality roasters and independent coffee shops to discover.
The Peak District, with its charming villages and dramatic vistas, is right on your doorstep. Hop on a bus or train, and you could be hiking up a hill, rock climbing or enjoying tea and cake in a cute village café in no time.

Sheffield is in the north, so if you’re moving up from the south, you might notice a drop in temperature, particularly during autumn and winter. Thanks to its elevated position and proximity to the Pennines, snow isn’t unusual during the colder months. So, make sure you pack plenty of warm layers and a good waterproof coat.

Sheffield is known as the birthplace of football. Sheffield FC (not to be confused with the city’s two professional league clubs, Sheffield Utd and Sheffield Wednesday) was formed in 1857 and is recognised by FIFA as the world’s oldest independent football club. Its founders also drew up some rules of the game that are still used today, such as headers, free kicks and corners.
