What Makes Glasgow a Safe Student City?

If going to uni will be your first time moving away from home, then it’s really normal that you’re going to feel slightly nervous about moving to a new city, especially if you're coming from a smaller hometown. After all, you’ll probably be living away from your parents and friends and family navigating unfamiliar streets, getting to grips with public transport and meeting new people, so it's no wonder that it can feel a little overwhelming.

However, if you’ve chosen to move to Glasgow as your student city, then we want to ease your mind. With its friendly atmosphere, large student community and great university support services, it is a really fantastic place to live. There are plenty of reasons to feel confident about making the move, so let’s take a look at them in more detail...

The friendly locals and a strong community spirit

Glasgow is renowned for its warm and welcoming locals and community spirit. In fact, it’s twice been voted the UK’s friendliest city by Condé Nast readers. Students here talk fondly of their interactions with Glaswegians; it’s the type of place where people will chat to you at the bus stop or in the pub, and will genuinely want to help if you’re lost or in trouble. If you’re not used to chatting with strangers, it might even take a bit of getting used to! However, you’ll quickly grow to appreciate the openness of Glaswegians and find yourself joining in as well.

Nice areas to socialise in

Part of the joy of moving to a new city is discovering the best places to go. If you’re heading out with friends, Glasgow has plenty of cool spots. Check out areas like Finnieston, the West End and Merchant City. They have buzzing food and nightlife scenes and stay busy well into the evening. For a more traditional student night out, head to Sauchiehall Street, where you can always find a party. Wherever you go, it’s always a good idea to stay aware of your surroundings, stick together and look out for each other on nights out.

There's a safe taxi scheme

If you’re on a night out and find yourself without enough money to get home, don’t be tempted to walk back alone. Make use of Glasgow Taxis’ Safe Home Scheme. If you can’t fund a taxi home for whatever reason, give Glasgow Taxis a call and tell them you are a student. Show them your student ID when they show up, and they’ll drop you safely at home. You can then pay your fare at the students’ union when you’re able to.

Student safety is key at university

All the universities in Glasgow take student wellbeing and safety very seriously. Both the University of Glasgow and Glasgow Caledonian University use the SafeZone app, which allows you to send a location-based alert from your phone if you need first aid, emergency assistance or any general support while on campus or in halls. Once triggered, a member of the university’s security team will be in contact to assist you.

Glasgow University Union always has a Safe Space on their club nights. It’s a place to go if you ever feel like you need a breather, have lost a friend or need space away from someone. Just ask a steward and they’ll direct you to it.
