Small Wins to Celebrate Exam Milestones
When you’re revising for multiple uni exams and feeling under pressure, it’s really easy to slip into the habit where you focus solely on what’s left to do and achieve. And, unfortunately, that constant pressure can quickly lead to burnout.
Celebrating small wins during exam season can help you to stay motivated during revision periods, build momentum, reduce overwhelm and perhaps even enjoy some of the process, instead of just focussing on the end results.
So, what counts as a small win?
A small win isn’t about achieving perfection or top results, it’s about celebrating progress and taking the time to acknowledge just how far you’ve come.
A small win could be finishing a revision topic you’ve been avoiding or dreading. It could be completing a full past paper and feeling confident about it. It could be finally understanding a concept you’ve been struggling with or sticking to your study plan for the day, despite being tempted by other distractions or what your friends might be doing.
Realising you’ve achieved a small win can shift your mindset from “I’m not doing enough” to “I’m actually getting somewhere”. And, this is a pretty cool feeling.

Milestone Moments - Checklist
To help you keep on top of your small wins, we’ve put together a suggested checklist of milestones to help you through the exam season.
Simply tick off as and when each one is complete, pat yourself on the back and enjoy a small moment to celebrate your own personal success.
1. Starting!
Yes, getting started is often the hardest part! Your first proper revision session deserves recognition and signals that you’re on your way.
2. Completing a full study day
You’ve been building momentum - little bits of study here and there and trying your best to get into the zone. And, now your first complete full study day is finished - this means that you’re getting into a solid rhythm with your learning. Keep going!
3. Finishing a difficult topic
We all naturally have topics we like and ones we like the least. And, the topics that we try to avoid are usually the ones that drain the most energy from us. Tackling them head on is a big win. When a tricky subject or concept is suddenly grasped, it’s likely you’ll feel a huge sign of relief!
4. Hitting the halfway point
It could be that you’ve reached halfway through your revision plan or the midpoint of your full day of study - either way this is a major psychological boost. Enjoy it!
5. Finishing a difficult topic
Completing an exam is an important milestone, signalling that you’re a little further into the process. Don’t wait until they’re all done. Every exam finished is progress, so acknowledge it and the relief that comes with it.
6. Showing up on a tough day
Let’s face it, some days are just really hard. We all know the ones we’re talking about. So, if you struggled, and studied anyway, that’s a win well-worth recognising.

How to celebrate exam milestones
Celebrating doesn’t mean going all out with a late night and losing focus. It means having a list of modest, mini rewards in your back pocket that you can bring out to treat yourself without derailing your routine.
Here are some ideas…
- Watching an episode (or two!) of your favourite Netflix series without feeling guilty about revision
- Enjoying a slice of cake/pie/brownie at your favourite cafe. Mayya Bakery is where we might head to as a Salford student.
- Meeting a friend or housemate for a catch-up
- Visiting the Salford Museum and Art Gallery for a couple of hours to decompress and enjoy the latest exhibition.
- Having a proper guilt-free lie-in the next morning - alarm clock firmly off
- Listening to a podcast that’s entertaining rather than educational!
Celebrating your exam milestones isn’t about doing more, it’s just about recognising what you’ve already done. Small consistent rewards help you stay motivated and actually make exam season feel manageable and perhaps marginally joyful, if that’s at all possible!
